Thanks to the Algerien for responding so bravely -- these are, in fact, tragic remarks on the part of the foreign minister. Let no one think that Algeria was "better off" under the French. The French in Algeria were better off under the French -- but the Algerians suffered like the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza suffer today. Colonialism thrives on lying to itself about its own enlightenment, on denying its own inherent racism. The truth is that in the occupied territories, as in occupied Algeria, one group of people has flourished on the backs of another. This doesn't excuse the Algerian minister's remarks. Arab countries -- especially those with such a magnificent Jewish history -- should respect and embrace their Jewish brethren and, more importantly, practice an equal amount of self-respect and self-love. Victims don't help themselves by crying about abuse, that's for sure, but no one helps by denying the abuses that were perpetrated in the first place.
