As a French (secular) Jew, I would say that it's not dissimilar to the situation of Jews in the UK in the 19th century, when Sephardic Jews were usually perfectly integrated in the community (re : Benjamin Disraeli), whereas recently immigrated Ashkenazi, poor, destitute, speaking only Yiddish, were the focus of ant-semitism (remember Dickens's "Fagin the Jew"), hence the -successful- efforts by the Sephardic community to integrate the newcomers. In France, secular Jews are well integrated, and we keep our specificities to ourselves. Hassidim are relatively fewer, and although more "visible" to the eyes of Goyim, the standard French people label them as folklorish ("Ah, yes, like in the 'Rabbi Jacob' movie..." - and that's that). On the other hand, Arabs and / or Muslims (often lumped in the same category as "potential delinquents" by the French) are visible, different, and therefore focus the mistrust,... ...but then again, you'll also find regular magazine covers on "the power of the Masons", "the Protestants in France : a ruling caste ?", and other drivel... In this country like in all others, there is a small percentage of idiots looking for a good explanation to their own failures.. Honestly, I can't say I feel on the racist's or the population's radar these days (which isn't to say my family didn't pay dearly here 70 years ago, but that's - I hope - another story...)
