The importance of "A Lesson in Spin" by Dan Ben-David cannot be overemphasized. If correct, the percentage of conscripts who will pass the level 9 reading test in 2012 will be zero. That is, our education system in Israel will be producing a cohort of illiterate zombies. However, missing from Ben-David's article is a clear explanation of this alarmingly steep inverse relationship between literacy and money spent on education. In his speculation, Ben-David would appear to ignore the robust data that show that stress impairs memory and learning . And Israeli kids and their teachers have long-been subjected to massive stress induced by war and terror. The impairment of learning will continue irrespective of how much money is thrown at the education system - the crucial variable being the duration and amplitude of stress, not money. The Palestinians are not exempt from stress - and so we have the spectre looming of two cohorts of zombies slugging each other to death.
