As a Catholic, I watched the movie thinking of how much Lincoln reminded me of a Christ-figure. The gentleness, the tireless dedication to helping the least of men, the gathering of disciples (was not his quarrelling cabinet akin to disciples, often unwilling at first but eventually dedicated adherents to a man and his vision), but most evocatively in Lincoln's use of parables to make a point and to teach. Having read this wonderful column I am struck by the fact that Jesus was most certainly a Talmudic scholar and in this sense it was this Jewish aspect of his being that I was seeing without realizing it.
