It is a mistake to try to impose historical perspectives upon today. Rather one should look at today to see how things were at some parallel period in the past when the Jewish people were in similar occupation of the lands occupied today. After all, the land was not empty when it was first invaded. That way one can interpret the atmosphere, the level of military aggression, and the opposition to occupation from residual inhabitants that doubtless existed then in much the same way as it does now. Such an approach would provide a common perspective for both Jew and Arab and should lead to better understanding of the intermittent struggle that tears the land apart again today.
