A.B. Yehoshua expresses a typical Israeli view. Born in Russia and having lived for a number of years in Israel and US, I understand what he is saying perfectly well. A typical secular native born Israeli suffers from a superiority complex. He sees Diaspora Jews as lacking authenticity. American Jews with their funny Hebrew accents, unbounded enthusiasm, and nice disposition are perceived as village fools, someone to practice jokes on and ask for all kinds of favors without giving anything in return. The same attitude remains when these people come over here. I have yet to meet one native born Israeli in any of the numerous congregations I have belonged to over the years. So, our revered author is a representative of a ?nasty? Israeli, fairly common specimen. He will lick your boots when you kick him and bite your hand when you pet him, which, accidentally, is what the American Jews do, out of their gentle nature. Does it mean we should stop supporting Israel? Of course not.
