Yehoshua is absolutely correct. Wherever Jews got a trace of emancipation they left Judaism in large proportions (i.e.,see Amos Aylon, German Requiem). My extensive experience as a fourth generation Israeli who spends a lot of time in the US leads to the simple conclusion that Yehoshua reaches. Namely, assimilation is so rampant that the number of Jews is diminishing in the US in alarming proprtions. A recent census indicates that there are now 5.2 million people who claim to be Jewish in the USA (down from over 6 millions a generation ago). In the USA which is a country of immigrants it is easy for Jews with full emancipation to assimilate and shed their Jewish identity. Barring an unlikely (but not impossible) rise in discrimination and and antisemitism (which exists to a certain extent under the surface)in two to three generations the only Jews who will remain in the USA will be those who are deeply religious. It is a fact well understood by those insulted by Yehoshua.
