As I recall the word for the South Africa situation was Apartheid. So many are so upset over the word because it describes the SA situation which is inexact parallel. In the US we had Separate but (un)Equal, Jim Crow and Segregation. What is needed and couldn't be disputed is a Hebrew or Arabic word for the unique situation in the territories. Using a Hebrew or Arabic word, instead of an Afrikaans word doesn't change the situation, but would focus the debate on the problem and not the word.
