There must be something that I do not know. When I was first learning the Old Testament stories, I began wondering why, after the Israelites received the 10 commandments, including the injuctions against stealing and killing, they were then told by Yahweh to take all the cities, houses, vineyards and olive groves which they had not planted, wells which they had not dug, all the goods and labour of the Canaanites, who had stayed in their land during the famine which had caused Jacob and his clan to move to the flesh-pots of Egypt, and, to top it all off, they were told to kill every single living being, men, women, children, animals. And Jephthah had his daughter killed. David not only slew hundreds of Philistines, he chopped off their foreskins as a dowry. David had Uriah killed, then had Rahab's sons hanged and left to be eaten by carrion birds. And Samuel told Saul to kill every Amalekite, men, women, children, animals. Kill, kill, kill. Explain, please!
