MF: "The Syrians must understand that they have nothing to fear from Israel -- that is at least not a direct attack." They have every reason to believe that Israel will attack her. It was very very clear after 9/11 that Bush's "war plans" involved an invasion of Syria, either from a "triumphant" US Army fresh from its Iraqi Cakewalk, or via the US proxy called "Israel". The latter option is still possible, and the Israeli leadership still believes in cakewalks. Israel won't attack? Why not, MichaelF? She has a long history of shouting "pre-emption!" and launching herself against the neighbors, and she has shown herself to be very annoyed by the constant Syrian calls for peace talks. This is one way of shutting Assad up and ensuring they get to keep the Golan (a very desirable outcome) and as a way of currying favor with Washington while sticking it to Tehran (even more desirable). Olmert is giving this very serious thought. Even now. Don't kid yourseld otherwise.
