In Germany, it is a crime to deny the Holocaust. And who is to say Germany had no right to pass that law? Try denying that slavery existed in the US, and then see how far defending yourself by saying "academic freedom!" gets you. There is such a thing as slander. There is such a thing as falsehood. Freedom of speech applies absolutely to opinions, and subjective matters. But when dealing with facts; the freedom to lie, or create false impressions, may be properly limited or qualified. There may be consequences. Even in the US, where it may be a crime to yell "fire!" in crowded theatre - if there is in fact no fire. Democracy is not just anarchy and chaos.
