Although legal, institutional segregation was a fact in the South, segregation in New York and the entire North was a fact of life. This is well known historically. So your claim that you did not know bigotry growing up in New York is incredible, to say the least. I challenge you to give any statistics from those days that would prove me wrong. Furthermore, even Jews were discriminated against. For example, the great physicist, Richard Feynman was not accepted to the college of his choice because he was Jewish.
