The figure of 400 keeps getting toted around as if it has a basis in fact. Every semi-literate talkbacker 'knows' it. Fact: in 1948 the vast majority of the native haredi population of jerusalem studied full time, both married and unmarried men. That alone was more than 400. It was several thousand. And what happened between 1948 and 1977 when Begin succumbed? There were many thousands of yeshivah students both in jerusalem and bene beraq and even some in other centres as well. Most got a postponement from military duty on account of their studies (that lasted until they had a sizeable family), but a significant percentage were being fully excused. I'm not going into the rights and wrongs of that system, but at least stop publishing deliberately false information.
