Originally the joke was not about Jews but a bedraggled castaway staggering around in a vast desert, crazy with thirst. Suddenly, from over a sand dune a dapper figure in a business suit approaches carrying an attache case. Water, water whispers the dying man. Sorry, haven't any water, says the newcomer, opening his case, but I have a nice assortment of neckties, only $5. The salesman is sent away with a curse. The wanderer crawls on, on his hands and knees over the sand dune. On the other side he sees a restaurant. No it is not a mirage. Crawling nearer he can see through the window a real dinning room, tables covered in white white and with sparkling silverware and on each a large pitch of ice water. He crawls in, water, water he pleads. Sure, we have plenty of water, says the maitre d', but I am afraid we can't admit you without a necktie.
