There is no way to negotiate with Syria for the Golan Heights. They were lost to Israel in a war started by Israel's welcoming neighbours and they provide the greatest natural strategic barrier to a Syrian and/or Lebanese invasion. Militarily they are a necessity to the survival of Israel and Israel can, will, and should not return them. For Aeons land has changed hands as a result of wars, the fact that Israel successfully not only repelled but countered the action of hostile neighbours is not a crime and the borders were adjusted appropriately as in times of war to the victor go the spoils and the terms of the war included annexation. In addition to that as long as Hezbollah and Hamas are funded by Iran they will not simply accept that their "mission" is over and peacefully disarm, they will see this is a victory and this will only heighten their activity. It's nothing new and it's naive to think that this time they will willingly disarm

A milestone birthday is as good an opportunity as any for a midlife crisis about the Middle East crises.
