"The Romans were merely executioners." It is unreasonable to believe that a Roman governor would allow himself to be pushed around by a subject people like that. Jesus was executed for sedition against Rome by Roman soldiers, following a Roman trial. 120 years later, after the expulsion from Jerusalem, when John's Gospel was written, it suited the Christians, many not Jews by birth, to exonerate the Romans and blame the rebellious Jews.
