There are no guards in sight because Palestinians used to blow themselves up when they got close, there is a wall because suicide bombers used to infiltrate, the sea is cut off because they used to import weapons from there - Karine A ring a bell. The Palestinian guard can afford to be relaxed, there is no backlog of Israelis strapping bombs to themselves and trying to blow him up. If it is any consolation when I cross the Allenby bridge I get the same crap until they realise I am Israeli - I got asked why I had so many coins in my bag!!!. Whilst it is frustrating, I do understand that there is a genuine security issue and don't see it as some plot against me personally. You should try spending time inside Israel and see that we have to put up with security at least 10 times a day, but I don't know a single Israeli would rather be blown up.
