Apartheid in South Africa meant a whole lot of racist distinctions as you know, but these were relatively unimportant. Of real importance was the Bantustan system. The RSA government denied citizenship to all Blacks on the grounds that they had full rights in one or other tribal Bantustan, all of which were to become independent states eventually. In practice, most of them were too small to be viable, most split into many small sections, and all were enclaves within RSA. Only workers with jobs were to be allowed into white RSA on a temporary basis. Now there is the parallel with Israel/Palestine and why so many now accuse Israel of being an Apartheid state.
