Some did live in what is now Israel, many were recent migrant arrivals at best. Not a convenient truth - just look at Arafat who was born in Egypt way before 1948. Migration for economic or political reasons was not uncommon then and now. What is uncommon is that the status of the refugees has been maintained to their detriment as political pawns by neighboring Arab regimes and they have been fed the lie that they and all their progeny will return to Israel. They should have been resettled and allowed to get on with their lives like every other refugee group including Jewish refugees from Arab countries.
