D: "powell has stated before that it is not politically feasible for israel to demolish (even the small) settlements while terror is ongoing." And that *is* an arguable case, but it is a POLITICAL argument, not a claim that they are LEGAL. D: "Bush has stated that the big settlements blocs are a permanent reality and cannot be moved." Again, a POLITICAL statement from The Most Hopeless President Ever. Since Carter no President has been concerned with the legality of the settlements, because the USA *wants* Israel to come out ahead in the negotiations, and so the USA must insist on looking at Israel's NEEDS, and not on what Israel is LEGALLY ENTITLED TO. Why? Because the USA understands that the settlements are illegal, so it MUST refuse to make a comment on their illegality and instead MUST concentrate soley on their "reality". It means the USA is not an honest broker, which is why US attempts at mediation always fail. Or hasn't that thought ever occurred to you?
