Olmert is DEMANDING Israel must keep these settlements, which is an admission that they are meant to be permanent .... (1)olmert never built these settlements, so he can demand what he wants also it is in the nture of negotitions especially in middle east that both sides start off with maximum demands and then gradully concede. (2) he wants a signed agreement, if the palestinians agree it must be legal. (3)other settlements he has agreed to disband, so those would be legal. (4)us military experts concluded after six day war that Israel is not miltarily defensible in '67 borders. So it is a matter of Israel's natioanal survival to settle in west bank. international law is not a suicide pact. (jb) viability of an illegal settlement policy. ... how do you know that Israel has an obligation to demolish 'illegal' settlements. maybe it is a one off breach of international law, not a continuous one. duncan
