Many of the specialist institutions of higher learning in Palestine are situated in East-Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nablus and Bir Zeit. Gazan medical students are unable to attend medical school classes in Jerusalem or Nablus and video-links are no substitute. Physiotherapy students are unable to travel to Bethlehem, where the national physiotherapy training college is located. And so on. This is a gross violation of basic academic freedom. Security checks fine. But to deny students as a body the right to study at the colleges and universities in East Jerusalem and the Westbank is unacceptable. If Israeli academics stay silent on this, then this only reinforces the moral justification for an academic boycott of Israel.
