It is well known that Irgun and Haganah forces committed rapes in 1948 as part of their terror campaign of ethnic cleansing. This was again confirmed by Rosemarie Eisber's book "Under the Cover of War, The Expulsion of the Palestinians" published last year, which featured interviews with almost 200 Palestinian refugees who actually lived through the experience. That rapes were committed was already known from the Zionist archives. Conservative Palestinian Arab society considered the loss of honour of its women through rape by enemy forces a terrible thing. Which is why factors as fear of rape and fear of being killed was an important reason why Palestinians fled. Typically a village would first come under sustained shelling, after which it was attacked by enemy forces. They would leave one way open for the Palestinians to flee. Any remaining Palestinian civilians ran the risk of being killed (as happened with many elderly) and younger women raped.
