Right about here: Shlomo: "What would happen next? Does the US expect Israel to occupy Syria and establish democracy there?" Exactly. Israel does not WANT to give the Golan up, yet it knows that is the price it must pay for a peace treaty. Therefore it has no other alternative; to short-circuit any more diplomacy from Assad Israel must provoke a war with Syria and (it believes) quickly beat it to a pulp. Viola! another 40 years of Syria cowering in the corner. But Shlomo has it right; what then? Israel will have to drive all the way to Damascus this time, and then....what? The Syrians are ready, and the IDF has not engaged Syria in a full-on, slam-bang war in 40 years. What if the Syrians are way better than you thought? What if the IDF is nowhere near as good as you think it is? What if you start that war, and you loose? Israeli thinking is hubris of the highest order; just give the damn land back to its owner, and sign the damn peace treaty. Nitwits.
