Since AD 134, Palestine has been occupied by inhabitants who stayed there and took care of the land. The Jewish nation was dispossessed, as many others, and dispersed. When the decision came to found a new state, the Jewish settlers had absolutely no proof that they had owned any of the land or that even any of their ancestors came from Palestine. Those are certainly baseless claims to justify harming the native population. And the settlers knew exactly what was happening. Jabotinsky, in his 1923 "Iron Wall" essay spoke of how difficult it would be to take the land away from the "Palestinian Arabs." They are still struggling to end the occupation and justice is on their side.
