Hello Mark, nice to hear from you. I am glad I did not have to witness for myself the effect of the booms and so cannot speak about them authoritatively. Some people on this site think that all booms are alike . Of course, this is not the case. A sonic boom is generated when an airplane exceeds the speed of sound (Mach 1). But the intensity of the boom depends on the velocity the plane reaches. Mach 2.2 (as typical fighter planes are capable of) gives a stronger boom. Also, the sonic boom (actually a pressure "shock wave") travels from the plane to the ground, and the higher the plane the more the wave dissipates while on this travel. So high flying planes will be less awesome. I don't know what the actual situation is. Gideon Levy complains about the effect on children and on pregnant women. He cites some sources so perhaps he is right. My own fear is that one day Israel will wake up to a situation were the Defense minister is indicted as a war criminal. Better to avoid this possibility, especially when there are alternative Israeli responses not involving the military, as I indicate in post #108. Best regards, BG
