The claim that CENTCOM and Amb Goldberg assured Israel that no US naval vessels were in the area of attack on the USS Liberty is a lie, and irrelevant. Liberty was under command of 6th Fleet, which was under command of CINC US Naval Forces Europe, not CENTCOM. CENTCOM could issue no such statement. It commands 5th Fleet. As UN AMB, Goldberg would, and could, not comment on position of US naval ships: he would know nothing of such matters. Anyone who thinks Israel did the right thing to attack the Liberty is a zionist, anti-American apparatchik. The Liberty was in international waters: it had a legal maritime right to be there; Israel did not have any legal authority to order the Liberty, or any other ship, in international waters, out of the area. By claiming Israel had the right to sink the Liberty you are claiming Israel had the right to sink any ship, from any nation, in international waters. That is an act of war and a war crime. Adolf Eichmann apologized.
