Israel has gone into Gaza and Nablus and other Palestiian centers numerous times and gets drastic reductions in violence for short periods afterwards. It goes in with a plan to suppress violence in the short term, but never with a long-term plan to get out in a manner that allows it to stay out - and leave behind a peaceful neighbor. Dealing with Hamas has to be part of an overall plan if you ever want peace. The Brits have occationally done this. Even the US has occationally done this (we do not still occupy every place we have invaded). But it cannot be done ad hoc. A plan is necessary. This is one of the lessons of Viet Nam. The US is only waking up to this basic fact in Iraq and eventually we will wake up to it in other parts of the world, too. Use of force is an extension of politics, but by other means. But ultimately, a political settlement is the only way to end the conflict.
