that i can easily foresee happening in the long run, since israel has "sort-of/kind-of" committed itself to a two state solution, is the eventual annexation of gaza by israel and the complete removal of all palestinians to the west bank. otherwise that little strip of territory will be a thorn in its side forever; even if peace IS attained. meanwhile, israel will continue carving away at the west bank so that when that time comes; it'll be able to retain as much of it as possible. this is something i've alsways felt that sharon had in mind with his withdrawal. he knew what the outcome was going to be in gaza. he completely enabled hamas by undermining and isolating arafat, crippling the pa, and sending in the idf to wreak their havoc. and when he withdrew from gaza; hamas was his "ace-the-hole" and he KNEW it! anyone who thinks he wasn't up to something dirty really doesn't know the man's history. i guess time will tell...but the bottom line is that hamas serves only to give israel the reason it needs to continue its ways and the time it needs to expand and harden its enclaves in the west bank. hamas will NEVER realize its stated goals, even its moderates see that, and the longer it continues its futile bravado; the less land the palestinians will be left with in the end. i detest the history of israel's treatment of the palestinian people, and i detest the persecution and humiliation it continues subjecting them to today; but i can also see that the tactics hamas and all its subordinate groups use against israel are its excuse to the world for continuing what its been doing for 40 years. so if hamas were truly interested in the palestinian cause; it would STOP and make sure all others stop. that would leave israel in the spotlight while literally holding the bag; and with all the world watching.
