Tourist tip #51 / Mosquitoes
Israel is home to over 30 species of these persistent pests, and during the hot summer months they can, err, really bug you.
You’ve heard about the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Dead Sea. And you probably know that when coming to Israel you should pack sunscreen, some modest clothes and a floppy hat. But don't forget to also pack bug spray, because you may not have heard about the scourge of many travelers to the Holy Land – the tiny, but tremendously annoying mosquito.
This country is home to over 30 different species of the persistent pest, and although the mosquitoes in Israel don’t generally carry infectious diseases like malaria (which was last reported in the country in the 1950s), in rare cases they can carry diseases like the West Nile Virus.
As mosquitoes tend to be more active in hotter weather, when summer comes, you need to be especially vigilant, or else you'll find the critters biting your legs during an al fresco dinner and possibly buzzing in your ear as you try to sleep.
If you don’t want the souvenirs from your holiday to include some itchy red bites, it’s worth stocking up on mosquito repellant, such as chemical sprays or creams containing DEET, or more natural options like citronella oil.
