Micron Technology workers assured no layoffs imminent
Earlier this week workers were told the plant would be closed in the next few years if a buyer is not found.
Workers at the giant Micron Technology plant in Kiryat Gat have been assured that the plant will continue operations until 2015. Earlier this week workers were told the plant would be closed in the next few years if a buyer is not found. However, management stressed Thursday that a buyer is being sought and currently no employees will be laid off.
The plant produces NOR memory chips, which are used in computer games and cellphones. However, it produces silicon wafers of 200 millimeters diameter while the latest technology uses 300 millimeters. The facility employs about 500 production staff, in addition to about 800 other employees who work in development, administration and business planning.
In its statement Thursday, the company said if efforts to sell the facility are unsuccessful, Micron will gradually reduce production in Kiryat Gat and reduce staff accordingly.
