The lawyer for former President Moshe Katsav says his client is devastated by his rape conviction last month.

Zion Amir's assessment was the first glimpse of Katsav's state of mind since the conviction.

Amir told Army Radio on Wednesday that whoever wanted to see the former president's downfall has gotten what he wants. “The man is in bad shape, very  bad.”

He would not say whether he feared for Katsav.

The court which found Katsav guilty of rape will probably decide whether to send him to prison in late February or early March, one of his defence lawyers said on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old former president and Likud minister was convicted of two counts of raping an employee while he was a Cabinet minister in the late 1990s. He was also convicted of lesser counts of sexual misconduct involving two other women who worked for him when he was president from 2000 to 2007.
