Two Palestinian militants were killed and an Israel Defense Forces soldier was seriously wounded last night in an exchange of fire on Israel's border with the Gaza Strip.

The exchange of fire was prompted by an attempt by Palestinian militants to infiltrate into Israel from Gaza.

During the infiltration attempt, mortars were fired toward Israel from Gaza.

The wounded IDF soldier was transported to a hospital by helicopter.

In recent days the number of border incidents has increased.

On Thursday morning the Israel Air Force fired at three Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to mortar shells fired from the territory. The security coordinator of a town in the Eshkol Regional Council was slightly wounded by the mortar fire.

On Tuesday IDF soldiers uncovered explosive devices planted to target IDF patrols in four areas along the border.

Earlier last week an IDF tank was damaged when an anti-tank missile was fired at it near the border. The IDF said it has detected an improvement in the anti-tank capabilities of militants operating in the Gaza Strip as a result of smuggling.
