Thousands of policemen will be deployed around synagogues, cemeteries and crowded areas today to maintain order and safety during the Yom Kippur holiday. Police activity will also be beefed up at land and sea border passes.

Officers will be on special alert in Jerusalem to prevent riots, acts of terror, or friction between the various communities in the city.

Although 42 percent of the country's Jews see themselves as secular, most of the public intends to observe Yom Kippur, at least partly, surveys indicate.

According to a survey conducted by the Yesodot organization, 61 of adult Jews say they would fast and 51 percent intend to go to synagogue.

The weather is expected to be fast-friendly in most areas of the country today and tomorrow, even cooler than normal part of the time with a chance of showers in the North.
