David Blatt signed yesterday for Efes Pilsen on Turkey to become the first foreigner to coach the team.

The former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach signed a one-year deal with an option for another season.

Efes was swept 4-0 by Ulker in the Turkish playoff finals in each of the past two seasons and was stopped in the second stage of the Euroleague.

"I see it as a great challenge to coach Efes and take it to the Turkish championship and to advance in the Euroleague," Blatt said.

Efes is Blatt's fifth team as head coach after spells with Maccabi, Galil Elyon, St. Petersburg and Treviso.

"It was important for me to coach in the Euroleague and that is why I decided not to continue at Treviso," Blatt said of his decision to leave the Italian team.

Meanwhile, Pini Gershon, under whom Blatt worked at Maccabi, will continue at Olympiacos after signing a contract extension with the Greek club.

Gershon leads the Piraeus team out in Game 4 of the Greek playoff finals Sunday night. Panathinaikos leads the series 2-1.
