Orr Gottlieb led the Tel Aviv Comrades to a pair of convincing wins in Premier League play this week, pitching seven strong innings in an 11-3 win over Ra’anana and a six-inning, one-run stint as Tel Aviv defeated Jerusalem 8-4.
In the contest against Ra’anana last Thursday, Gottlieb struck out 10 and allowed only two earned runs.

Omri Modiano led Tel Aviv’s offense with a pair of doubles and a single, plating two, while first baseman Amit Kurz scored three runs and third baseman Herbie Epstein collected a double and three walks.

Ra’anana’s left-handed ace John Braxton struck out seven Comrades in four innings of one-hit, shutout work before reliever Gilad Zwilling surrendered four runs in the fifth as he struggled with his control.

In Tuesday’s game against Jerusalem Gottlieb was touched for a run in the first inning as Jerusalem’s leadoff man Yehuda Joffe walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Aric Weinberg. But that was all Jerusalem could muster against Tel Aviv’s ace, who went on to fan nine batters during his six innings on the mound.

Jerusalem’s shortstop Meir Ginensky and second baseman Menachem Lafazan turned a neat double play to end the first inning after Tel Aviv’s leadoff man Yuli Tsypin began the inning with a booming double. But Tel Aviv took advantage of several walks and Jerusalem fielding miscues to put some crooked numbers on the scoreboard in each of the next three innings, with key RBIs from Epstein, Allan Goodman and Noam Caliser.

Tel Aviv’s right fielder Roei Shalem made a key grab on a searing liner by Weinberg, while the latter also had a web gem for Jerusalem, running down a long drive to left field. Ilan Klein reached base three times for Jerusalem, with two singles and a walk.

Next week’s schedule features a daytime doubleheader on Tuesday, with Ra’anana facing Jerusalem at 9:00 AM, followed by a 12:30 game between Tel Aviv and Bud’s Boys Modi’in. Tel Aviv will also play against Modi’in Sunday evening and face Ra’anana again on Thursday evening. All games are at the Baptist Village field in Petah Tikva.
