Assad's younger brother dies of undisclosed illness in Damascus
Syrian news agency says death followed a 'long struggle with a severe illness.'
The youngest brother of Syrian President Bashar Assad died of an undisclosed illness in Damascus on Saturday, a Syrian news agency reported.
Majd Hafez al-Assad died "after a long struggle with a severe illness," reported the Syrian Arab News Agency.
Majd Hafez al-Assad is survived by his brothers Bashar and Maher, and a sister, Bushra.
Assad's elder brother, Basil Assad was expected to become Syria's next president but was killed in a car accident in 1994.
Bashar Assad became president in 2000, following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad.
In 2008, a report was released accusing Bashar's brother-in-law of organizing a military coup to drive Assad out of power.
