The Israel Defense Forces will award posthumous medals to three soldiers who were killed while foiling terror attacks. They include Nahal Brigade soldier Tuvia Yanai Weissman, who was killed while tackling terrorists during a stabbing attack at the Rami Levi supermarket in the West Bank’s Sha’ar Binyamin industrial zone on February 18.

Weissman, who was on leave at the time of the attack, stormed the terrorists although he wasn’t carrying his service weapon. The officer commanding Central Command, Maj. Gen. Roni Numa, will give the medal to his family. The IDF spokesman wrote that Weissman “made contact barehanded, and by his action was a shining example of IDF values.” Weisman’s commanders were the ones who recommended awarding the medal.

His widow, Yael Weissman, fought for Weissman to be recognized as having fallen in battle, rather than in a terrorist attack. The Defense Ministry initially claimed that an investigation had found that he “fell in a terrorist attack,” but that decision was later reversed.

Another citation will be awarded to Lihi Malka, a female soldier in the Home Front Command. Malka will receive a medal from the commander of the Benjamin Regional Brigade for her response during a shooting attack in the Adam area north of Jerusalem. According to the IDF’s announcement, she acted “swiftly, and demonstrated courage, calm and professionalism.”

The third citation will go to Matan Shamir, a Givati Brigade soldier. Shamir, who will receive his medal from the commander of the Samaria Regional Brigade, was wounded in a stabbing attack near Nablus, but continued to behave with “courage, calm and professionalism,” according to the announcement.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot approved the granting of the medals. In addition, the Tzabar Battalion of the Givati Brigade and Shai Ohayon, an operations officer in the Border Police Rama Brigade, will be given letters of recognition. Ohayon will receive the letter for his activity in finding and rescuing two IDF soldiers from the Oketz unit who were attacked after accidentally entering the Qalandiyah refugee camp.
