Iranians took to social media to express outrage this week after the price of onions quadrupled.
Iranian social media is abuzz with photos of onion jewelry, carrying the hashtags #onions and #luxury. The price of onions in Iran has risen from 1,000 tomans (39 cents) to 4,400 tomans, BBC Monitoring reported.
Iranian Minister of Agriculture Mahmoud Hojjati blamed the black market and a decrease in production for the hefty price increase in an article on the Islamic Republic News Agency.
But the president of the Mashhad Farmer's Union disagreed. Tasnim News quoted him as saying that the ministry of agriculture is responsible for the price hike, as it failed to purchase enough onions last season, leading less farmers to grow the crop this season.
One satirical Instagram post shows Aladdin asking the genie for one kilo of onions, with the genie responding that he can't. Another tweet features a padlocked bag of onions, captioned "can Rohani's key unlock this?"
A photo on twitter shows an onion in the place of a diamond on a ring, with the caption "the most expensive engagement ring in Iran." Another says "Shirazi salad in Rohani's state!" with an empty salad bowl.
