Israeli Irit Grenchel moved into the top log spot in the women's singles at the Maccabiah lawn bowls tournament yesterday, while in men's play, local star Jeff Rabkin remains undefeated after five games.
Grenchel recorded two significant wins yesterday. One victory was over the defending Maccabiah champion, Britain's Marienne Wainstein, 21-3, followed by a 21-5 win over South Africa's Merle Frank.
Wainstein's hopes of retaining the crown were further dented when she lost 21-10 to Israel's Chaya Prager, who also defeated her Australian opponent. Grenchel has eight points, followed by Prager, Wainstein and Frank with four each.
In the match of the day and in the most dramatic of last ends, Israel's George Kaminsky lost to South Africa's 23-year-old Jonty Alexander 21-20. Each player turned in magnificent conversion shots that shifted the game's fortune, but eventually, Alexander's bowl was awarded the shot on an umpire's measure. Rabkin with 10 log points is followed by Australia's Pepe Glick and Alexander with eight points, followed by Kaminsky and American Sam Benjamin with 6 points.
In the men's fours, Israel's Colin Silberstein's B team remains unbeaten with five wins followed by Raymond Sher's A team with four wins and American's Howard Harris and South Africa's Mike Brown with three wins each.
