As U.S. Election Day Nears, Rabbis Should Steer Clear of Pulpit Politics

Endorsing a candidate or party from the pulpit puts a crack in the wall that separates religion and state.

Just a few days before Rosh Hashanah my phone rang.  It was a member of the congregation who said he had an urgent matter to discuss with me.  

“Rabbi,” he said, “I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I’ve decided that I have to speak to you about this before it’s too late.”

“Ok,” I said. “What is it?”
