U.K. Labourite: Muslim councilor shunned me for being Jewish
Birmingham council hopeful Elaina Cohen: Mahmood Hussain said wouldn't back 'white and Jewish' candidate.
By Haaretz Service Tags: US Jewish World Israel newsA British Labour party activist running for Birmingham City Council plans to sue an incumbent councilor for refusing to support her because she is "white and Jewish", British blog The Stirrer reported on Wednesday.
Elaina Cohen had sought support from former Birmingham Lord Mayor Mahmood Hussain who refuted her request on allegedly racial grounds, according to The Stirrer.
Hussain has denied Cohen's charge that he would not support her candidacy for the Lozells and East Handsworth council seat.
Hussain is also a councilor in the same district, and The Stirrer reported that Hussain refused to compromise his support among his Muslim constituents by backing Cohen.
Cohen was informed, according to The Stirrer, that the council's Standards Board sub-committee was unwilling to take action over her claim against Hussain and the Labour party similarly ruled that it would not investigate her allegations.
"After a full and thorough investigation took place, it was not possible from the information made available at the time to conclude the precise events of the evening in question," said the Labour statement quoted by the Web site. "Therefore, no further action will be taken in respect of the complaint made by Elaina Cohen against Cllr Mahmood Hussein."
The Stirrer also quoted Cohen as saying, "I'm not happy with the outcome, and I'm not going to let it rest there." She continued, "This is not just for me, this is for everyone who comes under his control and influence."
