I think this article says something unfortunate about humanity and the Jewish community. Mostly I say this from the comments I read which are focused on blaming sometone or rationalizing as to why. How does that help anybody? In the name of being a human being, we have a obligation to help everyone in this world breath easier. However, as Jews we have a special obligation to other Jews. Why? Because history has taught us that if we don't defend ourselves good chance no one else will. In the name of humanity we must stand up for humanity. STOP blaming, STOP rationalizing. Do Something! Don't blame others for giving where they chose to give, give something of yourself!

My son is 15 and I was too poor to give him a bar mitzfah two years ago. I tried to make aliyah two years ago as a divorced mother, but was shunned by the fact that the jewish agency for israel would not give me an absorption affordable apt saying they don't like single mothers to get in because they never leave...That was BS, because I would have worked there and made sure to leave in due time to my own apartment. My ex israeli husband has not sent my son child support in over 10 years from Israel while I lived here. Ten years ago when we split, i went to the jewish agency for israel and they shunned me then saying if you're an american jew, you must have the money to go to back to Israel without our aid..Well, I have worked jobs over these years, but did not make large income..other jews are shocked I am poor and even the local Jewish federation here was of no help...It's all a disgrace because even fellow jews think all jews have money.

Part of the problem is that to be poor and Jewish in America is to be "invisible" to Jews and non-Jews alike. The more fortunate ones blame the victim. They claim that the only poor Jews are the Chassidic Jews who study Torah all day instead of getting jobs and having too many children. But most American Jews are either Reform or Conservative. Middle-aged Jews, regardless of level of education, are discriminated against for good jobs - consequently they're poor (especially if they're divorced women). Disabled people are discriminated against for good jobs. Age and disability discrimination is a big factor. So is classism - the elephant in the living room that everyone pretends doesn't exist - that is a major factor, too. Those who come from poverty, who live in the poorer inner-city ghettoes who didn't have the support from middle class parents couldn't afford to extend their education beyond a bachelor degree level at a public state university, and had to incur unaffordable student loans just to get even that much of an education, which doesn't count for much these days. And because the non-Jewish population thinks we're all rich, that we have all the money, etc., poor Jews are not acknowledged by non-Jews, because as poor Jews we are not seen among the affluent Jewish suburbs. We live in the poor non-Jewish inner-city ghettoes because that's the only place we can afford to live. Similarly, poor Jews are snubbed by more fortunate fellow Jews in as well as out of synagogue. This is the leading cause for assimilation and dropping out of Jewish life altogether. Nobody wants to know you when you're poor. Being poor limits your educational, vocational, social and marital opportunities in a class-stratified society like America (even though America falsely claims to be "classless"). In today's global economy, with fewer good jobs and opportunities to go around for everyone, getting a good job is all about who - not what - you know. Those who are well off don't open their networks to the poor. They marginalize and socially exclude the poor. So no matter what a poor Jew tries to do in order to get ahead, they - like the non-Jewish poor - never get a fair chance. Until the American Jewish community recognizes these injustices caused by perpetuating classism, things are only going to get worse.

What many fail to acknowledge and or see, is that many Jewish families do a good amount of charitable donations while earning no more than an average salary / paycheck. America's jewish communities are among the wealthiest in the nation. The poverty story is PORE PROPOGANDA designed to fleece the American taxpayer out of more money.

The cause for most of this is that the ultraorthodox and hasidic commnities choose to study torah/talmud all their lives, disengage from the secular world (except for welfare, section 8 housing, medicaid, wic, etc.; that they will take), have no work skills, don't want or try to get jobs, etc. And then they have 10 kids, so of course per capita income is low and family is in poverty. And of course the size of this community grows and grows. Same problem in U.S. & Israel, though in Israel is going to be a bigger problem over time. In U.S. it is hidden and and small % of overall population. But this community is biggest bunch of welfare dependents.

Chicago has 250,000 Jews.I see a poverty rate so far of .028% Double it to include Rogers Park and count charedim who learn in kollels or whatever and you have a max of .084% You are not going to find many poor Jews in the northern or western suburbs.The story is all made up to make the Israeli poverty rate look better.

Very loud calls for American Jews to make Aliya to Israel. Very important for Israel to have a large block of votes to influence American Politicians to abide by what AIPAC decrees.

First, the article presents no statistical proof for its accusations. Which, while I assume it is correct, given that minorities in one nation vs a majority in another, the majority usually has better access to wealth. But, what is the point? If the point is that Jews are better off where they are the majority and control the system. Well, that seems obvious. Is it to say that American Jews are discriminated against and suppressed. Well, in that case you need to compare them to other American minorities: Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, ect...... I think you would see they are probably better off over all because they have mobilized to fill the vacuum of the state and provided for their own. As the pictured shelter has done. Last, if the intention to say that the living is better in Israel. I think that is a matter of perception. Greater poverty, but much fewer bombs.

This study doesn't factor in people working off the books nad not reporting income or older Russians living with above the poverty-line children. IMO poverty is worse in israel by far. And very very few American Jews give money to the settlements.

We Jews are a people filled with paradoxes. Not all Jews are stinkingly wealthy as some non-Jews believe. But, there are Jewish millionaires by the boatload, as we all know, most especially here in Hollywood. Studies have shown that many Jewish trilionaires give unselfishly to charities (in US and Israel), but many do not. Literally trillions in potential estate money is not earmarked towards Jewish affiliated social problems. It's too bad, for us. Israel may have less poverty, but also far fewer very wealthy. The line is skewed far higher in the US, something this very good article did not tell. But, yes, there are poverty stricken Jews in the US..as indicated. Some of it is the Jews own fault..Orthodox with too many children for example. The upside, they produce more Jews, something Hitler and Arafat loathed. As far as Russian Jews, the elderly, what does anyone expect. I'd like to know how many HALF-JEWS were in this study? The results might change the stats. Again, who is a Jew.

The interesting line in the article is that "In Israel 24 percent of the population is considered poor, but about half is not Jewish." The qusestion therefore is whether or not the Jews in the States fare worse than citizens who are not Jews. Or is the article advocating special treatment for poverty stricken Jews??? And by burying the the true poverty rate of Israel in the article, is the writer implying that the poverty rate in Israel of non-Jews doesn't really matter???

I find that hard to believehaving lived in Jewish areas both in NY and in Florida where everyone had nice homes and atleast 2 cars. How do they know that the people going to the soup kitchens are Jewish, is that the criteria for geting a hot meal now from a soup kitchen run by a Jewish organization? It makes sense that Russian Jews in America are the majority of the the poor Jews there. Because of their poor knowledge of English they can't get good jobs and they are too proud to do low-paid menial jobs, hence they end up with nothing.

What's 'poor' in Israel and what's 'poor' in the United States? Unless and until that is defined, the numbers mean nothing. It's like deciding that 80% of Americans are 'good in bed.' Question is, what's your standard?
