Rights group official suspended for collecting Nazi memorabilia
A pro-Israel blog revealed that a Human Rights Watch official collected German wartime artifacts.
By The Associated Press Tags: Israel news NaziA human rights group's senior military analyst has been suspended after a pro-Israel blog reported that he collects Nazi memorabilia, an official said Tuesday.
Marc Garlasco is being suspended by Human Rights Watch "pending an investigation," said Carroll Bogert, associate director of the New York-based organization. The suspension was first reported Monday by The New York Times on its Web site.
"We do know he collects German and American World War II memorabilia, but we have questions as to whether we've learned everything we need to know," Bogert said.
Garlasco's collection was revealed last week on Mere Rhetoric, a pro-Israel blog. A blog posting said his hobby reflected an anti-Israel bias and showed he was "obsessed with the color and pageantry of Nazism."
Human Rights Watch has no evidence that Garlasco's hobby affected his analysis, and he "has never expressed any anti-Semitic or neo-Nazi statements," Bogert said.
Human Rights Watch has released reports suggesting that Israel committed war crimes during its three-week military offensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip last winter. Garlasco, a weapons expert for the group, has contributed to some of these reports.
Israel has accused Human Rights Watch of paying a disproportionate amount of attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while playing down rights violations in Arab countries.
In an essay posted Friday on the political Web site The Huffington Post, a liberal political Web site and blog, Garlasco described himself as a "military geek" whose hobby stemmed from his family history. He noted that his German grandfather was conscripted into the Nazi army.
"I've never hidden my hobby, because there's nothing shameful in it, however weird it might seem to those who aren't fascinated by military history," he wrote. "Precisely because it's so obvious that the Nazis were evil, I never realized that other people, including friends and colleagues, might wonder why I care about these things."

No, Jacob, the Israeli govt's rebuttal was quite troublesome, the Saudi issue was pathetic (as if there aren't pro-democracy interests in Saudi Arabia). This is really a case where you try to spread as much scattershot and hope to hit something.
In fact in Israel there are human rights groups Btselem constantly question Israel?s government practices the IDF and raise their voices loudly. Those who really dislike "human-rights" are the Arabs and the Muslim world. Here is an example; only a few days ago the Pakistani military made a very brutal raid against the Taleban terrorists in the swat valley. Many civilians were dead and many complained of torture. There was no word from these European Human Rights groups that constantly scream against Israel. I have not heard Swiss (Dino) also say anything against it. Similarly when these Taleban terrorists had captured the Swat valley and they were torturing more secular civilians the HR groups were very mild in their words and Swiss (Dino) was totally silent.

Precisely because it's so obvious that the Nazis were evil, I never realized that other people, including friends and colleagues, might wonder why I care about these things." - Marc Garlasco I must agree with him. Anyone who has attended a US 'gun show' knows the difference between those vendors appealing to the WW II collector and those appealing to those who admire Nazi regalia. Certainly a Nazi lover would have nothing to do with Human Rights Watch. Those I have met LOATHE bleeding heart organizations like HRW.
It already published a rebuttal as to both the necessity for its actions in Gaza and the methods it used. Now, with the incessent attacks against Israel, essentially denying its right to self-defense, Jews are questioning the credibility of those who continue with these attacks. As the commentators point out above, it's the trend that creates a reasonable concern. When you have one analyst who is a Nazi memorabellia enthusiast, another who supported terrorist attacks against Jews, and a third who shilled for money in Saudia Arabia by highlighting how the organization 'goes after Israel' and is a former pro-Arab lobbyist, then yes, there is more to this than just one incident.
If these NGO's want to 'investiigate' and report on what they think about Israel, Israel has the same right to look into these people to see if they are really impartial. They are casting the first stone, as our neighbours would say, and we are just responding. The British press and media do the same to public figures every day.
interest group of people who set out to single out a particular nation-state, one that is the national home of a particular singled out people. Sadly, they use the term "human rights" to promote "human hate", while soliciting funds to do so from countries, e.g. Saudi Arabia, that are some of the worst human rights violators.
i would love to collect nazi stuff for a collection cuz i like history. does that make me anti semitic or a nazi.. so museums who have nazi stuff re anti semitic?? like yad vashem?? by the way im a jew but i think that nazi stuff re cool to collect cuz they have an history! it doesnt mean that im a nazi!! but if he really has racist opinions about any kind o people whats he doin in rights org?? isnt racism a crime against humans???
then the organization main investigator was found to be Nazi supporter. What is next for this "human rights" group, collecting money where slavery is widespread and employing Nazi supporters? And these are only aspects characterize this orgnaization without people investigating too deeply into its doings...!!
This is the tactic that the pro-occupation, anti-Israeli, right-wing extremists need to take to attack the research of the human rights organizations documenting the actions of the Israeli military. INSTEAD of going after the validity of the research, they go after the people behind the research. This is called a logical fallacy in argumentation, called an ad hominem attack. It has nothing to do with the report of HRW, which should be judged in and of itself. The right has a hard time making a solid argument on that front however. I myself, a jew who despises the Nazis, own several pieces of Nazi "memorabilia" that my Grandfather took while he was a U.S. military intelligence officer behind German lines during WWII. And I am fascinated by them. His collecting of WWII Nazi memorabilia is an ambiguous act and could stem from a multitude of contingent yet healthy psychological factors, and even if not, stop with the ad hominem attacks and deal with the evidence in the reports.
....organisations so much...??? Ever asked yourself that question...??? An attitude you share with many despotes in the Arab world (and elsewhere) by the way.....
So he collects war memorabilia from both sides? I know plenty of people fascinated by the war, and am pretty interested myself. Does that make me a self-hating Jew? No - quite the opposite.
Not for the pleasure of owning Nazi medals etc. Look at what the rest of HRW activists have got up to before they became HRW officials? What a bunch,no wonder you feel the need to deflect for them.
As difficult as the media and the useful idiots on the street (as the KGB would call them) would like to believe, Nazism, Communism and all modern-day progressive movements have infiltrated itself into the masses through the Left politically, from human rights efforts, workers rights movements, and other seemingly noble movements for social justice. Don't be surprised, be smart about who is behind the movements we think are going to be a better alternative to the unbearable international mess we find ourselves in.
What other information is HRW hiding about its staff and contributors? The next thing that should be disclosed is how much of HRW's funding is coming from anti-Israeli organizations. How can an organization consider itself to be unbias if it gets funding from terrorist organizations or countries that support terrorism.
The criminal state just can't stop whining about anything and everything can they?
"Human Rights Watch has no evidence that Garlasco's hobby affected his analysis", Garlasco said that "his German grandfather was conscripted into the Nazi army". Does anyone say that someone who watches child pornography will not be affected and not become a paedophile and should work in a kindergarten? No, I haven't heard that argument... Human Rights Watch has been accused of writing biased analysis reports against Israel. With folk like Garlasco giving their contribution, this explains a lot.
collecting nazi stuff is fine. doesn't mean he's a nazi lover. i have an old arab knife i bought at a market. does it mean i worship arabs?
who praised the murders of israeli athletes in munich?does he stay at "human rights" watch?
who went to saudi arabia to collect money from the great human rights stalwarts?while enjoying her visit she bad mouthed the jewish state to wheedle money from the egregious saudis. does she stay or go?
....the (supposed) blood libel accusations from "Aftonbladet" against the Israeli army: Innocent till proven guilty....
