More global anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2009 than any year since WWII

Annual Jewish Agency report cites poll finding 42% of West Europeans believe Jews exploit past to extort money.

By Nir Hasson Tags: Holocaust Jewish World Israel news anti-Semitism

Nearly half of Western European believe that Jews exploit the persecution of their past as a method of extorting money, according to an annual Jewish Agency report released on Sunday.

A joint report on anti-Semitism conducted by the Agency and the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs found that 42 percent of those polled by the University of Bielefeld in Germany agreed that "Jews exploit the past to extort money."

The countries in which the highest percentage of the population agreed with that statement were Poland and Spain.

According to the Jewish Agency, there were more anti-Semitic incidents in 2009 than in any year since the Second World War. In the first three months of 2009 - immediately following Israel's three-week offensive on the Gaza Strip - there were as many anti-Semitic incidents recorded as in the entire year of 2008.

In France, for example, there were 631 anti-Semitic incidents recorded in the first half of 2009, compared to 474 in all of 2008.

Worldwide, eight people were killed in attacks last year.

The report indicates that there were two murders linked with anti-Semitism in the United States in 2009 - one of a female university student in Connecticut and the other of a non-Jewish guard at the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C.

This rise in anti-Semitism is stemming from both the political Left and Right, according to the Jewish Agency.

At the press conference at which the report was released, officials referred to a film that has been making the rounds in recent days that charges Israel with stealing organs at the IDF hospital in Haiti.

Antisemitism has always ebbed and flowed throughout history, long before Israel came to being. When nations had economic or other hardships they blamed the Jews. When families lost their homes, jobs, etc. they blamed the Jews. When wars broke out, or there wasn't enough food they blamed the Jews. That is history. And actually today, the antisemitism in the world, especially Europe, is a walk in the park in comparison to what Jews had to endure throughout the centuries. At least today European Jews aren't humiliated by governments who forced them to wear distinctive clothing or badges and forced to live in ghettos. So to solely blame antisemitism on Israel's policies is wrong. Sure, it has had a significant effect, but if Israel wasn't around, it would be something else causing this bigotry. And why not? After all, it's much more comforting to blame others instead of yourself for your own misfortunes and failures.

Islamic anti-Semitism has been around since 622 CE and is a large part of the anti-Semitism we're seeing today. People have forgotten the Charles Martels and the Jan Sobieskis who have fought this same enemy that is attacking Jews today - and blaming Jews for the woes its totalitarian dictators impose on its own people.

FYI the German Jews wanted nothing more than to be the best citizens of Germany and were proud to be such. For this they got death in a thousand ways..ways that make a normal person vomit. Obviously you are no student of history because your comments are shallow and hollow. Has it ever occurred to you to read a history book about the Middle East and the treatment of the arabs towards Jews..has it ever occurred to you to read about how the entire arab world attacked Israel in '48 with the hope of destroying the country and killing all of the Jews? You should keep your comments to yourself because they are ignorant and you make yourself a fool. Take the time to learn the truth before you embarrass yourself again.

the term anti-semitsm means not only jews-hatred, but also arabs-hatred, palestinians-hatred, for they are all semitic-peoples, who speak semitic-languages. in 1879 wilhelm marr in germany used for the first time the words anti-semitism as a euphemism for jews-hatred in his "anti-semitische hefte". jews-hatred exists already as long as the jewish people exists. and hate/hatred exists as long as mankind exists. without hate/hatred we can perhaps accomplis a lot more good things.

The fact that we are indoctrinated about The Holocaust has not stopped further genocide. Rwanda, Cambodia, Sudan to name three, but then there is what happened in Matabeleland in Zimbabwe. The fact is we are forced fed the Holocaust because the jewish lobby demand it, to ensure a steady revenue stream for Israel. It is a business nothing to do with preventing the same thing happening again, or remembrance it is about money. When Holocaust Survivors are forced to sleep on park benches where their fellow Israeli citizens take their dogs to defecate shows just what Israelis really think about the Holocaust, that they allow such a thing to happen.

When mentioning the successes of Western Civilization Europeans refer to themselves as European as a New Yorker does being American. When they mention the Holocaust, or Bosnia, or the Inquisition they speak of themselves as an isolated beacon of culture within a world of barbarity. When will citizens of Europe admit that the European Union and it's member nations are only so few steps away from states within one nation? I don't understand posters on this board. Europeans will accuse Americans and Israelis of nothing but rabid nationalism in the context of a Gideon Levy editorial. Somehow Gideon Levy and the publication that publishes him are disassociated from Israel. They will accuse Americans of never venturing across the Atlantic when they themselves have never done so. By the way, traveling from Boston to Los Angeles is nearly 3,000 miles, and to assume homogeneity is as ignorant as what Euro's accuse Americans of being.

However I come back to his sentence "To your credit you acknowledge that anti-semitism is not just about Israel...." On the contrary I am saying that currently it is very very largely a result of Israeli policy. What I have gone on to debate is why there is this Israeli policy, which seems to me so incredibly counter-productive.

Phineas Whoppy asks me why Jews should be less noisy. First, of course one acknowledges the contribution of Jews in many fields. And no doubt it has something to do with the culture, including the feeling of being persecuted. Defiance of the world naturally leads to achievement. The trouble is that this spills over into what is perceived as arrogance. These Talkbacks are filled with attitudes of superiority (and hatred) towards others, especially those who query Israeli actions. Other religions share the Jewish work ethic but are characterised by much more modesty.

Of course I have no first-hand experience: but I think it is something worth asking. How could so many neighbours turn a blind eye when Jews went to the death camps. I am quite sure in my own mind that it had nothing to do with blood libels and responsibility for the death of Jesus. I can't believe people were that religious. But I remember a post here some time ago from an Austrian Jew that while most Jews were trying to assimilate the Orthodox men from the east wore their very very conspicuous (threatening?) medieval garb. I can't think of any other religion where the men parade their faith in your face like that. Being different was never a good recipe for being accepted. Of course there a lot more aspects to this issue, but little room to expand.

'Regardless of whether Jews act like lemmings or stand strong and tall they will be hated...playing the game of the appeaser only makes the haters hate more and playing the strong and proud game makes us hated because we are able to crush the enemy.' - Connie You said it. It doesn't make any difference, Jew hatred is a fact of life. But you forgot a third option: not playing games at all. Just having the courage to be what one is and to take pride in that, no artifice, no chest-thumping, no crawling. You are not the only person to have learned the holocaust lesson at the dinner table. • 25.01.10
    • 11:02

So, according to you, there is no connection between diaspora Jews and Israel, most attacks on Jews are carried out by Muslims and the reason for those attacks is the climate of hate carried over from pre-holocaust Europeans, the media, neo-Nazi propaganda plus (what we all know was negligible) Arab antisemitism. But you propose punishing not the neo-Nazis, not the media and not the historic Jew-haters. Instead you offer us Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia, Libya (only Iran having even a semblance of a Jewish community to persecute at this point in time) as alternative whipping-boys. Nadav, most of the attacks on Jews were noted in Europe and the Americas. Most of the historic Jew-hatred comes from Europe. Most of the Muslims in Europe come from North Africa and the Indian sub-continent. Since you yourself blame the Europeans for being the source, what governed your choice of enemy targets? Couldn't be their comparative proximity to.... Israel, perchance?

To think that anti-semitism is a legitimate response to alleged Israeli actions in the Gaza strip is rediculous. Do people attack the Chinese, Serbs, Russians, or Muslims when they oppress their occupied territories? NO! No matter what occurs in the Mid-East, there should NOT be anti-semitic attacks against Jews- period! (which btw, are mostly caused my Muslims and Arabs in Western Europe). The reason for these attacks is pure and simple anti-antisemitism. It is the climate of hate that carried over from pre-Holocaust Europeans, the communist/Leftist media, old-schools Neo-Nazi propaganda, and Islamic Arab/Iranian Antisemitism (imported by "immigrants" in Europe). World Leaders should not just condemn anti-antisemitism but publicly act against it, by breaking ties with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and Saudi Arabia, Libya etc..., which use anti-Semitism as part of their propaganda war, knowing full well that all ears are open in a traditionally anti-Semitic Europe.

The nation of Islam was created to remain to the end of time, strong and dominant." "Dominant"??? Hasn't happened. Never will. Muslims can't blame God for the parlous contemporary state of Muslim-majority countries and the demonstrable inferiority of these countries in rights, dignity, scientific progress and wealth. So they blame the Jews. It's the next best thing.

considering the increased awareness of, and vocal opposition to, israeli policy and human rights violations in the territories... combined with the automatic label of "anti-semitism" applied by jewish orgs, and israel itself, to any criticisms of israel(which IS in a sense an exploitation of the holocaust because of the connotations it holds)... one has to honestly wonder just how true to reality this report by the jewish agency actually is. that anti-semitism exists in the world is undeniable, just as do many other forms of bigotry; but i'll venture that the dramatic "increase" suggested by the jewish agency is more a reflection of the above than it is anything else.

January 12, 2010 From the NY Times, By David Brooks Jews are a famously accomplished group. They make up 0.2 percent of the world population, but 54 percent of the world chess champions, 27 percent of the Nobel physics laureates and 31 percent of the medicine laureates. Jews make up 2 percent of the U.S. population, but 21 percent of the Ivy League student bodies, 26 percent of the Kennedy Center honorees, 37 percent of the Academy Award-winning directors, 38 percent of those on a recent Business Week list of leading philanthropists, 51 percent of the Pulitzer Prize winners for nonfiction. In his book, ?The Golden Age of Jewish Achievement,? Steven L. Pease lists some of the explanations people have given for this record of achievement. ?The Jewish faith encourages a belief in progress and personal accountability. It is learning-based, not rite-based?. If it was not for Jews, your hemorrhoids may grow larger and travel to your brains. Do you still want Jews to keep quiet?

"Nearly half of Western European believe that Jews exploit the persecution of their past as a method of extorting money, according to an annual Jewish Agency report released on Sunday." Well, should Europeans not entertain this reality-based belief merely because the Jewish Agency labels it "anti-Semitic"? It seems these zionist Jewish organizations are always pointing the finger at others, making accusations about non-Jews but rarely, if ever, admit to the many wrongs committed against non-Jews by Jews and especially in the case of Israel (the so-called "Jewish state") for the perceived benefit of Jews as a group.

    • Philip
    • 25.01.10
    • 00:20

very different. The state of Israel is not a representative of the Jewish people. It wants to be one, but it is not. It is a state pursuing it's own interests (to secure a viable position and future in the Middle East). Its interests rarely have anything in common with interests of the Jewish people living in Europe of the US. The Jewish Agency is trying to parallel the criticism of Israel in it's handing of it's domestic situation with antisemitism, thereby exploiting the situation that Israel itself had created in Israel's favor (luring in immigrants).

At the same time as we have this column debating the connection between Israel's actions and anti-semitism, there's another headline on the attempt of some pro-Israel group to label Rahm Emmanuel 'a traitor to the Jews.' If Jews themselves make the equation, they can hardly blame others for accepting it. Rightly or wrongly, to be Jewish is to be associated with Israel's actions. What meaning does Israel have if it is not the national embodiment of the Jewish people? Personally, sometimes I think God sent modern Israel to punish Jews for their pride. It's become abundantly clear they are just as foolish, cruel, and unjust as the rest of us.

Europe has a history of anti-semitism anchored in from the middle ages, but is also one of the biggest supporter of human rights and international law today (at least compared to the rest of the world). And today Europe has many arabs. So if the majority of jews support a state that commits war crimes against arabs and breaches international law every other day, of course you are going to be targetted in Europe. The solution is for the moderate jews to distance themselves with the extremist stance of Israel. Make it clear that being jewish doesn't mean being a zionist. Because the zionists are voluntarily blurring the lines between the two. Make it clear that you are against breaching international law and violating the rights of other people, and you will have less racist acts against you.

Most of the increase is muslims who have been propagandized to blame the jews for the corrupt results of their leaders behaviour. the Euros, chronic appeasers and cowards, are only too happey to seek a way out that blames jews. Europe never paid the price for the 2000 years of slaughter, perhaps the muslims will be their karmic result. The left forgets that there was no mention by al quaeda of israel until that suggestion was made by muslims trying to deflect criticism for their terrorism.

Well, ten children were punished and the New York ALD spoke against the anti-semitic behavior of these 13-14 year-olds. Two of the children had jewish backgrounds..I think the ALD "jumped the shark" when it calls adolescent jewish kids anti-semitic. I'm 60 years old I've heard it for over 40 years, and I don't know how much more sensitize to the Jewish culture, history and suffering one must become. ADL enough already. Too much labeling people anti-semitic as a knee jerk reaction.

Nattile is most definitely not saying that any criticism of Israel is labeled as antisemitism to deflect the content of the criticism this is what she said: "What the Jewish Agency is reporting is the understandable reaction of ordinary people reacting to Israels harsh aggression." So what she's say is that the perception of Jews and ill feeling and I would say scribbling swastikas is understandable because of Israel. That is TOTALLY different than your assertion. Nattalie OK so there are people using your name and spewing virulent antisemitism. One of the posts under your name stated that it was good that someone killed a Jew in Jerusalem and it was good to have one less Jew to deal with. Do you back this statement or condemn it? Holocaust denial is already legal in the United States, as are most forms of free speech. That you don't know this makes me question most of your comments. All Ms. Durson has said is that any criticism of Israeli policy is written off as antisemitism. That way Israel doesn't have deal with substance of the criticism. By the way, you all should try a little more free speech. The stupidity of holocaust denial is exposed in the bright sunlight of open debate. I've never understood the nearly universal European approach of making this particular speech illegal.

62-year old Israel caused 1000-year old Euro antisemitism?

Antisemitism in Europe has been around rather longer than the State of Israel, which was reborn in response to 1000 years of Inquisitions, pogroms and Final Solutions, as well as 3rd class dhimmi "citizenship" in the Islamic world. To believe anything Israel does "causes" the antisemitism of 2009, you have to first believe that the Europeans and Moslems "cured" themselves of this disease prior to last year - and there is not the slightest shred of evidence for that. In US, until implementation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the south California community I now live in was by law off-limits to Jews at time of the 6-Day War. Good example: Brit antisemitism reached a new peak during Falklands war with hysterical UK claim Israeli jets caused Argentina's early scores; of course, virtually 100% of damage to Brit Navy was done by US-supplied Skyhawks and French Exocets, which all Brits knew at the time, but cowardice made "The Jews" easier to blame (just as now, when London subways explode).

The Holocaust industry has been working at full speed for decades now. Like in the UK it's obligatory for school students to study it and one person from every school class is guaranteed a visit to Auschwitz. And there are museums and TV programmes and films and Holocaust Days etc. etc. The Holocaust was one of the worst crimes in history, but it is now history. It's not massively relevant to kids under 20 and, after a while, they will start to resent being force-fed with it. The Holocaust Industry needs to ease up. We don't want to forget the Holocaust, but let's also talk about Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur. Plus British kids now, while endlessly being taught the Second World War, don't even know the basics of their own country's history up till then, which ultimately is far more important. And stop obsessing over minor anti-semitic incidents. There simply isn't that much prejudice against Jews. There's more prejudice in the US against black people, or in Israel against Arabs.

You like to think I am anti semitic because that suits your personal political ideology that all criticism of israel is anti semitic. Thats fair enough in that case I am a proud anti semite. Not that it means much the term has been bandied around by Zionists for so long there is a disconnect in it's use, much like the n word now used by the Black community as a source of pride. And therein lies the rub, attacking Jews is becoming more and more acceptable form of racism, which is what it is, just got a different term because Jews consider themselves 'special' because the term anti semitism means nothing in the wider community of Planet Earth. I noticed you didn't deny my accusations of Netanyahu using past events to support a political ideology.

Is it worth asking such closed question which offers people the opportunity to answer "yes" and thus to continue shattering what was sort of taboo after WWII ? Maybe finally that anti-semitism is constant (at a to high level) and not increasing but people feel more and more free to express it.

I don't wish to diminish anti-semitism, any true racism should be abhorred and we should all work to stamp it out. The reason I ask about the methodology though is something I've seen about the ADL in America. There they collect reports or complaints and they label any reported incident as anti-semtism, even when it is not. For example, a person wished to take a day off work to celebrate a religious festival, but was told by their boss that it wasn't possible. It is a shame not to have a day off work when you want it, but is this anti-semitism? I don't think so.

No wonder poland and spain are the more antisemitic countries. Both are hard core catholic and hard core stupid...Other than the meager imdenizations that Germany and the Swiss Banks paid for the Holocaust, probably less than a dime on the pillaged dollar,no other country paid a dime to the Jewish people...spain still did not pay anything for the enormous wealth it robbed from the Jews expelled by the Inquisition and for all the gold and silver it sucked out from the "New World" to its treasures. It's about time the Jewish People starts collecting...

The Jewish agency links "anti-semitism" to Israeli aggression

"Antisemitism" is not something that comes and goes based on Israels aggressive policies and actions. In fact, nobody even knows what "antisemitism" means any more. It's just a label used by Jews against someone who has annoyed them. What the Jewish Agency is reporting is the understandable reaction of ordinary people reacting to Israels harsh aggression. They made this association themselves. I am surprised that they reported it in that manner.

"More anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2009 than any year since WWII" - Haaretz Could there be a connection with the return of anti-Semitism and the actions of Israel in the last decade? For those of us who are old enough to remember when Israel was seen as a moral force and not a moral pariah reading articles like this bring a twinge of nostalgia.

but people only think it and are afraid to say it. Afterall it is not that long ago in the Knesset tha Netanyahu invoked the Holocaust to promote his political ideology. Or can anyone remember him turning up at the UN with the blueprints of Auschwitz Birkenau and waving them around? No Israelis never use anything from the past to get their own way. It's all a myth whcih cannot be questioned because Holocaust denial has been made illegal.

How about a link to this poll so that we can determine exactly what merits it has? You can reach any conclusion in polls. And there are huge amounts of polls made every day. An old saying to keep in mind here might be: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics".

Two Jewish authors wrote about how a lot of the money that was meant to go to holocaust survivors often went to the lawyers or others. That's pretty sad, and many holocaust survivors live in poverty. Billions went from Germany and also court cases and government money, but still the holocaust survivors didn't get enough aid. What was done with this money? And many pro-Israeli right wing Jews invoke the holocaust, anti-Semitism when they want to defend the abuse of Palestinian human rights just as some African American youth when you tell them they are violating school rules, they will claim you are racist and exploit the past. So, in a way, some do exploit things for political gain, unfortunately.

theres no doubt anti semitism is on the rise, veiled of course this time for political and shall we say "niceties" purposes, built upon modern guilt,a 1000 yrs of church indoctrination, primal hate and to be sure unenlightenment , as well as ignorance. There IS no israeli apartheid, it's only the manipulated reinvention of this term as the disguise of anti semetism, which is now overtly morphed into anti zionism, which REALLY in anti jew in the form of anti israel! Hence, the perverted use of the term apartheid, which when you speak to most south africans who really know how it was, is in no way similar of analogous to israel and the territories. find the documentary, "obession: radicals islams's war with the west". Unless people get their heads out of their u know what quickly, we're all gonna be screwed. Isn't it time anti semitism be done with? where is obama to speak on it in a "grand" speech of his? HE will go down as having helped bring on this avertable calamity...

A few decades ego the percentage of Europeans , especially Poles , who would gladly send every single Jew into a crematorium was much higher . It seems education , open society do help to improve the tolerance of natives . So the glass if actually half full . PS: In Spain the inquisition mentality still rings the bell .
