'Kick a Jew day' ends in suspensions for 10 Florida students

Florida Anti-Defamation League official says incident merits more than one-day suspensions.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Jewish World Israel news anti-Semitism

Ten middle school students in Naples, Florida have been suspended after taking part in what they termed "Kick a Jew Day" at their school, school district officials reported.

The one day in-school suspensions were served earlier this week.

The incident occurred a day before red-haired students were targeted at a California middle schoool in what was a Facebook group called "Kick a Ginger Day," which some say was inspired by the popular American animation series South Park.

The Naples Daily News quoted local school district officials as saying that they will concentrate on cultural sensitivity training, including 20 minutes of homeroom meetings each day at North Naples Middle School, on building character traits such as respect and kindness and on the prevention of bullying.

In the "Kick a Ginger Day" attacks, nobody was seriously hurt and no arrests were made.

The newspaper quoted a local Jewish leader as saying the incidents should result in more than suspensions.

"You are talking about an incident that has anti-Jewish bias if not anti-Semitism. You have Jewish students being singled out, harassed and assaulted," David Barkey of the Florida Anti-Defamation League told the Naples Daily News.

"If the allegations are true, it is possible these students violated Florida's new anti-bullying law. And, if students were physically assaulted, it could rise to the level of criminal conduct," he added.

Rabbi James Perman, of Temple Shalom in North Naples, called the situation "alarming."

"I can tell you this: I haven't seen anything like it in my 17 years in Naples. No child deserves this kind of treatment," he wrote in an e-mail Monday, the paper reported.

"Their parents are understandably outraged. So far it seems that the school system has taken appropriate measures and we applaud their efforts. At this point, teaching sensitive awareness is more important than punishing anyone."

    2) In Gym, when getting dressed, it`s evident that most Jewish boys have been circumcised In fact, approximately 70% of white, non-Hispanic males in the U.S. are circumcized. In the U.S., circumcision is not necessarily an indication of being Jewish. I am not Jewish and both of my nephws--ages 18 and 12 are circumcized.

My own idea of an appropriate punishment--in-school suspension until they write a twenty-page paper on why this kind of action is wrong. This will take at least a week. Make it a hand-written paper so they can't simply cut and paste from the internet. This way, the kids reflect on the actions and suffer an aversive consequence. Still, I am shocked. I taught for 3 years at a pretty tough high school and I don't believe something like that would have happened there.

... And most jews are Semitic like Arabs, like it or not. And the term "AntiSemitic" is thus an asinine misnomer, coined by an ant-Jew no less, as Jews and Arabs are BOTH Semitic, both with Semitic languages, like it or not. Jews are native to the Middle East and claim but a TINY part of it as their one state, like it or not! The cause of continuing Jew-hate is the simple odds that Jews are very few, while those of the faiths they contradict are huge in number, like it or not! ** Well said. The more closely-related people are, the more they're at each other's throats. That's something Darwin discovered in nature. Besides, hatred was born in the Middle East.

Yes, that hardship is necessary because they try to use ANYONE as a terrorist, even a 67-year old granny. Furthermore, Jews who attack Palestinians are prosecuted. Read the news, it's printed here. Truth is so inconvenient for you.

If I were a Jewish parent in Naples, Fla., I would tell my kids: Never, ever let anybody push you around because you are Jewish, or for any other reason. I would tell them, stand up for who you are. I would say resist. I would encourage them to sign up for martial arts training. I would advise them to be alert for any signs of racial slur or actions. I would contact other parents and demand that school administrators deal with this issue in a public manner, with a public meeting, letters to all parents and students, and beef up human-rights awareness. I would not let this pass.

A more fitting punishment would be at least three days out of school suspension and a mandatory lecture on the Holocaust by a Holocaust survivor, and maybe, just maybe these kids will learn something.

I'm ginger myself and I can tell you when I went to school there was more then one "kick a Ginger Day", although there was no need to organize it via Facebook. did I get hurt?yes,as you do on a schoolyard. Was that a matter for the Police or the school board?no,and why should it be?!it was the 70s&80s,children weren't yet packed in cotton wool like the today's breeds.bloody children single out all sorts of "minorities" to bully, that is pretty normal¬ different when it comes to Jews. But children's behaviour isn't political,no need to cry out 4 the Ginger Anti-Defarmation league, the police or severe punishment!show them that it is not okay, but also no biggy, cause it really ain't. Even today, as a ginger you are occasionally singled out (by "grownups") and made fun off.I never thought about calling the police for that matter...

    • suisse

They knew because most - not all but most - European Jews retained physical traits of others of the Middle East. Mainly darker hair, often curled, and so on. Yes there are light skinned and light haired Jews AND Arabs, and Kng David of the Jews is said to have been a red-head. But most Jews retain Mediterranean features which are generally different from typical North European features, like it or not. And most jews are Semitic like Arabs, like it or not. And the term "AntiSemitic" is thus an asinine misnomer, coined by an ant-Jew no less, as Jews and Arabs are BOTH Semitic, both with Semitic languages, like it or not. A number of months ago we had a "Slap a Jew" day at a local middle school... It was all over the media. I can tell you the school district here was much firmer with those dumb kids than the Naples school folks. This kind of crap isn't innocent "kid stuff" - it's the attitudes and feelings of their parents being demonstrated out in the open. A one day in-school suspension is laughable. It should have been at least a week, with daily instruction in the history of antisemitism. These young pukes need a reality check. And by the way, I feel just as strongly about the "Kick a Ginger" day stuff, too. Bullying is bullying, and singling out Jews is antisemtism.

I know it can seem like ADL is overreacting, but really Collier County (Naples FL) has a very aggressive Christian right. Last month a "pep rally" for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (many in the Naples high schools are members) filled up a high school football stadium. There's a town in Collier County called Ave Maria which advertizes itself as a "Catholic community" where the grocery store won't sell condums. A group was handing out Bibles to students in the high schools until ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State got involved. Sometimes you just have to take a zero tolerance point of view.

You want examples? There are plenty. Every single day, the IDF harasses millions of WB Pals and I'd be surprised is a single day ever passed without an IDF or settler shooting at or beating a Palestinian. Some Zionist Jews believe they have the right to take property from Pals simply because they are Jewish and the Pals are not. Zionist troops ordered to destroy 1 home often tear down numerous nearby homes. In 2002, the IDF destoyed the entire refugee camp in Jenin because of an attack by few on IDF, leaving 1000's homeless. This is virulent racism. Blacks in the US continue to suffer far greater discrimination than any US Jews. Things have improved greatly over the last 50 years, but it would be very hard to find a US black over age 20 who has not been beaten, had hateful threats yelled in their face or been harassed by police because of his/her race. US Jews have few if any such stories. Also, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, etc.

I used to think as you do, but I realised that the majority of good kids, academic and non academic alike are suffering, and I mean suffering.Bulleying causes irepairable damage to children, in some cases it results in suicide. I side with the victim, you support the perpetrator because they have suffered either sociologically or economically. You would claim, "They know not what they do". I think, having been brought up in the slums of the Gorbals. that they know exactly what they are doing. And it is always the innocent who suffer. Check out Violence in the Classroom. BTW Haaretz. There are PLENTY of overweight WB Arabs and NO starving ones! Have you seen their mansions and ranches, loads of new Mercedes cars and massive building projects first hand? Are you even faintly aware that most hardly ever see IDF soldiers except for on their TV sets? The IDF hardly even sees, never mind enters, most Arab towns and villages in the West Bank - for years! There are plenty of security checks on the Tel Aviv side of the Green Line as well, inconveniencing a lot more people than West Bank Arabs and Jews. "A day cooling off followed by extra lessons on how your actions affect others, seems to me the right response rather than succumb to the hang draw and quarter them mob mentality." You really have no idea have you? Tomorrow, "Kick the shit out of Blacks", "Paki bashing day" or better still "Kick a teacher day" I've seen teachers punched and kicked by students with Dyspraxia, Dyslesia, ADHD, Autism and general everyday anger problems. Of course you are right, a jolly good talking too solves the problem. An apology prompted by middle Pastoral staff also helps maintain high standards of "other Worldliness". Most teachers have lost the plot. I suggest calling in the parents, Permanent exclusion if there is a history of bulleying and a clear signal from the Heads and Governors that Bulleying and Racism will be met with expulsion. Then watch the 90% good students flourish when they can actually learn something without disruption.Man. you're creepy.

and does the punishment fit the crime? A day cooling off followed by extra lessons on how your actions affect others, seems to me the right response rather than succumb to the hang draw and quarter them mob mentality. These kids were doing what kids do something stupid, they are being taught that doing something stupid has repercussions. Surely that is all that is required i this case and will act as a deterrent to others in this school.

Hey Mike. The ADL is a powerful lobby. Think of it like a gun. Better to have one and not need one rather than need and not have. Be thankful the State of Israel exists. When the Jews in Europe were being slaughtered wholesale, they had neither an ADL or a Jewish State on which to rely.

In America we get along by keeping our religion to ourselves. Obviously the red haired kids in California stood out, but how did the Florida students know these kids are Jewish? Remember your own school days? Anybody who stood out from the crowd was likely to get teased by the other kids and sometimes even bullied. What was it about these Jewish kids that made them so visible and targets?

Chris, there is a difference between organized kicking of gingers, and of Jews. You ignore the history and effects of anti-Semitism over the centuries. You would also by your reasoning ignore racial hatred against Blacks--same as gingers, you'd say. I agree with you that too much has been made of this, and that it is absurd to raise this to a criminal level. They were chastised--case closed.

Congratulations ADL and Naples school, on proving that South Park's hilarious stereotype of the overbearing, humorless, raving Jewish mother (Mrs. Broflowski, Kyle's mom) is too often accurate. Thanks for continuing to make life for American Jews more miserable than it otherwise would be.

"Anti-Semites Chris and Michael in the UK try to twist this against Jews." As usual people like Ki'emli accuse anybody who doesn't think exactly like them of being anti-semitic. How is a gentle joke about the ADL ignoring anti-Gingerism anti-semitic? Do you actually know what anti-semitic means, Ki'emli? Why do you cheapen the accusation by just throwing it around like confetti? People like you have reduced the significance of the word to zero. I imagine in your eyes anybody who's not Jewish or American is automatically anti-semitic. And if they're Jewish and remotely critical of Israel, like Goldstone, then presumably they're self-hating Jews.

You'll be down on your knees in church praying to this Jew. So kids - make up your minds. Or make up whatever you have that's a substitute for the mind you should have in your pointy little heads.

This incident is a joke and actually reflects the full integration of Jews into middle class America. To those of you who don't get the context, South Park is a hilarious and offensive comedy cartoon show. It featured an episode about "Gingers" in which Cartman, a transparently immoral but hilarious character, begins a pogrom against Gingers. Additionally, one of the major characters (loosely based one of the two creators) is Jewish. This character is always being attacked for his Judaism in ridiculous ways by Cartman, a morally repugnant but hilarious character. To have "kick a Jew day" as well as "kick a Ginger day" shows that American Jews are as well accepted as Gingers - a pretty American population. The ADL can only do American Jews like me more harm than good.

Naples has a way to go before it will be an inclusive town. As far as anti-Semitic activity is concerned there have been previous nasty little incidents like this. For example, last year a Jewish woman who lives in Naples and is active in PFLAG had swastikas painted on her garage. But, in fairness (or should I say in unfairness) its not just Jewish residents of Naples who can feel scarily outnumbered by conservative, heterosexual, Christian, white folks.

There is no proof that there is virulent anti semitism in Florida either is there? As for this people with ginger hair were subjected to the exact same treatment that was meted out to Jews. Yet it is apparent that there are those who believe that because they attacked Jews they should have a greater punishment than when they attacked redheads. This cannot be fair in a democratic society like the United States where all men are equal under the law. It is probably different in Israel where Jews are accorded more rights than Palestinians or Christians but we are not talking Israel we are talking the United States.

Anti-Semites Chris and Michael in the UK try to twist this against Jews. The fact of the matter is that there isn't any virulent anti-Ginger prejudice. People aren't, by and large, denied neither housing nor employment, and they aren't subjected to violent attacks because of their hair color. Prove me wrong by finding other examples where such behavior is pervasive.

So some are more equal than others then? We often suspected that this was the case, but I didn't realise it is official ADL policy to discriminate about the discrimination cases that they choose to represent. Afterall their mission statement on the front page of their website states quite clearly and you can go and have a look if you wish To stop the defamation of the Jewish people...to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Or is this not true?

Can't you see the difference between the two cases (i.e. kicking redreheads vs. Jews)? Hatred for Jews can have long reaching consequences (have you forgoten the Holocaust)? I have not heard any institutaional or national hate backlash against redheads yet! Whereas the kicking readheads initiative looks like a silly game, the kicking Jews initiative could be born in ugly well knowns hatred feelings against Jews. I am surprised you can not see that.

As opposed to spending a week round each others houses playing on their Wii's laughing at the idea that kicking a Jew got them a week off school? Giving them a days suspension to cool off then lessons on how their actions can affect others is a much better way than ensuring this doesn't happen again. Being bored to tears in a room they don't want to be in will be a better deterrent than a weeks holiday I assure you.
