Jewish boxer 'Star of David' knocked out after 76 seconds
Muslim boxer wins WBA title after knocking down American Jew Dmitriy Salita 3 times before fight's end.
By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press Tags: Israel newsFormerly unbeaten American Jewish boxer Dmitriy Salita was knocked out on Saturday by Muslim boxer Amir Khan, the former WBA light-welterweight champion, after only 76 seconds in the ring.
Khan knocked Salita to the canvas after barely 10 seconds at Metro Radio Arena. Khan then hurt him with a left, forcing another count, and followed up with a lightning-quick combination to send the New York-based fighter down on one knee.
Salita, who had a Star of David decorating his shorts, got up fast but was unsteady on the ropes, and the referee stopped the bout to give Khan his first defense of a title he won by beating Andreas Kotelnik of Ukraine in July.
Khan is a Muslim of Pakistani decent, while Salita is an Orthodox Jewish fighter of Ukrainian decent who currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. During his free time, Salita also studies at a Yeshiva in Brooklyn.
Few gave Salita much of a shot against Khan, who is considered one of the most talented up-and-coming fighters at 64 kilograms in the world.
"It was very explosive," said Khan, who won silver for Britain at the 2004 Athens Olympics. "We had too much power for this guy. I'm a growing young man and developing as a man. After the first shot, I could see his legs buckling and I just had to take my time. I knew he was going."
Khan praised trainer Freddie Roach for turning around his career since losing in 54 seconds to Breidis Prescott of Colombia in September 2008.
"It was a blessing in disguise, what happened against Prescott. I got beat and came back stronger," Khan said. "I'm getting stronger and quicker. Freddie said to take it easy, pick the right shots and you'll take this guy out - and we did.
"Freddie is a great trainer, he's like a father figure to me, and to have him in my corner means a lot. Everyone knows I'm a hardworking fighter, and if you put the hard work in you're going to get the benefits."

I was not a great fan of Khan and to be honest before this fight I'd never even heard of Salita; but I chose to support Khan because I was sickened by the way Salita and his corner played the religious card. Religion should be left out of sport and politics. Something that Israel obviously struggles with.
Kia from Iran 10 and Palestinian Prince 18. Professional boxing has always been hyped out of all proportion. It is very often connected with criminal elements. The only reason it hasn't been banned is because all the authorities know it would go underground.
When he put the star on his trunks... all were found wanting. A poor performance, and a disgrace to the symbol he displayed.
of Jewish superiority over Arabs. But when Muslim boxer defeats a Jew, y'all say: "religion has nothing to do with performance"? Ain't that convenient...
Why let facts get in the way?
its funny how in the build up to this fight i only found haaretz making a big deal of the boxers' religions. dont actually see wht tht has to do with anything, it was a boxing match for a title. I was actually half expecting someone to start crying "antisemeitism" just because salita got booo-ed as he came on!!!! lol he was fighting away from home, ur not gonna have the most supportive of audiences are u?! doesnt matter if u hold up a newcastle footie shirt or decorate ur shorts with stars of david (not quite sure what that was abt since salita is american! dont see khan putting religious symbols on his shorts... and as for boxing not being permissable in islam: well if u mean by professional boxing where u r making money from purposely hurting another person.. i guess so.. but as a sport- well theres nothing wrong with it as a sport, its a sport, the Prophet SAW used to wrestle too. anyways enough abt religion... a great fight:)
Yeah right..Islam forbids boxing...where did u get this false info bro?!!
Match that !
On Israel
From 1972 until 2008, the record for a gold medal haul by a single athlete at an Olympic Games was held by Mark Spitz who is Jewish. At the 2008 games gold medals were won by Jewish swimmers Jason Lezak and Aaron Peirsol. Max Baer (Jewish) was world heavyweight boxing champion. And Daniel Mendoza of England was a legend of the early years of boxing in the 1700's. That's just off the top of my head. There are dozens of other examples. Which goes to prove that sweeping generalisations of the kind you have made, Norwegian, are the refuge of the intellectually lazy. Racism makes you stupid.
Jethro--how many Italian or Greek Americans carry their Italian flag or where on their skin? Does this make them bad Americans? Jews from the Ukraine, like Jews from Iran, and many other places consider Israel their homeland because they and their families have been discriminated and persecuted there. If u hate Jews, just say it. Don't make it a faux patriotic argument.
What are you talking about!? England World Cup winning team 1966 had a Cohen in the team. England Rugby World cup winning team 2003 also had Ben Cohen.... HAve Norway ever won either of these?!?! NO!
Any imbecile could put up such a post. Why you?
Let's face it, while there have been countless talented Jews in the fields of sciences, arts, etc., it is very rare to see a talented Jew in sports. Israel has won just one gold olympic medal in all its history, for instance. So, I think the "star of David" was just following the rule.
this is too absurd. it's just a boxing game. you win some and you loose some. stop reading anything into it.
reporting on a boxing fight with reference to Jewish and Muslim faith would not happen anywhere but in Israel. PS. The pocket battleship "Deutschland" was renamed "Lützow" in November 1939 to avoid the possible embarrassment of reporting on a naval encounter under the headline "Deutschland sunk". The Israeli media failed to display the same foresight in their cheering of the "Jewish boxer" ...
How many times have you been in the ring?
He entered the ring with an Israeli flag even though he's born in the Ukraine and raised in America! Not to mention the fact the Star of David was on his shorts.
How symbolic of a fight. When the conditions are fair then the zionist is hopelessly weak. Israel has profited from US/EU support to the detriment of US economy. US will come to see that it is paramount for its economic survival that it detaches from Israel. Then Israel will also be KO within 10 seconds.
Here in the UK we don't qualify sportmen/women by their religion. Here we say American boxer Dmitriy Salita and British boxer Amir Khan. Amir is a pround British young man. He is fighting for the British flag not for his religion.
First off, even though Salita was 30 and 0, name me some really well known opponents he destroyed? This was a mismatch from the beginning and shame on the promoters for putting it forward. They should have gave Salita more well rounded challengers before putting him in this match. This is the reason why Boxing has fell down the tubes and MMA has taken over. It's too bad Yuri Foreman is in a different weight division, now if they made him and Khan meet at a catchweight, that my friend would be a better matchup. This whole Muslim vs Jew concept from this boxing match is repugnant as well. Palestinians and Israelis have no bragging rights in this, Khan is from Pakistan while Salita is from the Ukraine.
Well...you know how 1 basketball team wins the other, the winning teams cuts the ropes off the rim of the loosing team, Khan should have stripped "salita" of his shorts. Not because he won but simply because he brought religion into this.
and Allan Dershowitz,Sarkozy, the free world?the young Ukrainian said that as a child he suffered from anti-Semites there. So he decided to become a strong Jew.I'm sure that Salita doesn't give up.He deserves a new confrontation and with some iron in gloves and with a judge who love us he will take a brilliant revenge.
And Jewish is not an ethnicity, rather a religion.
Why emphasizing differences, in stead of similarities? Muslim is not an ethnicity, rather a religion. Please do not divide.
If religion did not have anything to do with this fight then why would the american boxer decorate his short with the star of david? is that not a blatant religious symbolism that had no place in this fight against a british muslim? usually boxers decorate their shorts with their country's national flag, this american boxer chose otherwise and by doing so brought religion into the ring.
God does not take sides in sports. He also does not favor any one over the other. He is God and he is busy giving us viruses and sickness. Please get real!!!!!!!!!
Professional boxing should be banned. This is not a sport but barberism. The other thing is religon has nothing to do with sport. It is meaningless "muslim boxer" or "jewish boxer". You don't need to mention religon. Nobody say christian Maradona
I heard him interviewed and he seemed a nice guy.
It is a bad sport in the old days we loved muhammed ali not because he was a good moslem boxer but because he fought the system and won every time this one nothing to gloat about
Hyping religion or race is a mistake. Performance is based on talent, conditioning and desire. Hyping otherwise just perpetuates racial stereotypes.
It really was no contest, it took King Khan only 10 seconds to land the powerful yet lightening quick blow that knocked out Salita for the first time. Salita, who arrived with a heavily padded record, never really had a chance against King Khan, but I think there were some who expected him to put up more of a fight. Perhaps it was merciful that Salita was knocked out so quickly and did not have to face the full wrath of Khan.
"Muslim boxer wins WBA title after knocking down American Jew Dmitriy Salita 3 times before fight's end." Amir's a British boxer and Salita's American. It's a boxing contest, not a theological debate.
This is what happens when a muslim and a jew face each other on even terms.
maybe, maybe not.
