How a greener Jewish summer can make a greener Jewish future
New Eden Village summer camp says aims to be a living model of a sustainable Jewish community.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Jewish World Israel newsA group of young environmentally minded Jews have been hard at work over the last few months to prepare for this summer's grand debut of America's first overnight green camp, for other young environmentally minded Jews.
Eden Village Camp is a not-for-profit initiative, dreamt up by Yoni Stadlin and Vivian Lehrer, that aims to be "a living model of a thriving, inspired, sustainable Jewish community, grounded in social responsibility and a vibrant Jewish spiritual life."
Eden Village hopes to renew the "Jewish wisdom that speaks to the environmental concerns that today's young people care about, creating a substantive, relevant Judaism that is attracting youth who otherwise might have chosen a secular camp."
The camp will embody a "zero-waste goal, emphasis on developing youth leadership skills, focus on healthy, sustainable living and dynamic approach to Jewish education," adding that Eden Village was to support "campers in simultaneously transforming the world and themselves."
In July, 250 people broke ground on the farm at the camp's Beresheit (Creation) Work-Day Festival.
