European rabbis call new airports scanners 'immodest'

Any practicing God Fearing Man or Women will be modest. These scanners are for our protection and should be viewed in private by same sex. No different than medical privacy

Unfortunatly those who strap explosives to themselves and then detonate them also believe that they are operating under the instruction of their particular God. Everybody gets scanned regardless of religion, don't like it don't fly.

It IS spiritually invasive. Touch NOT anyone who isn't your wife or husband, it is written. Then, they wonder why SIN- homosexuality & lesbianism... hatred has flourished? Unless, security are pure, holy set-apart for God...they transfere their unclean, defiled spirits onto the innocent person being frisked ... searched. Thank God HIS mercies are NEW every morning! If people were walking totally with GOD they would be informed by God's Holy Spirit of Truth who to search & who not to pull aside. But who is in darkness & who is not? What does that have to do wilth all members of the Public going through Airport Scanners regardless of what religion they follow?

How do you know if a person is a Jew? Everyone goes through the scanners or they don't fly.

...because they lure personel on the ground into a false sense of security. That is if there is any trained personel left, because these "automated searches" will clearly lead to a reduction of manpower in the critical areas. Btw, the terrorists have already found a workaround. The bodyscanner won't find it there. What it will find: prostheses, nipple rings, genital jewelery, ileostomies. A lot of total innocent people will go through a lot of embarrassment while the bomber walks through untouched. Never change a working system. Israeli security checks have worked fine so far. If I have to choose between boarding a plane where trained personel did the check and one where the scanner was used, I go for the first one. Machines are dumb and there is always a workaround.

No one is saying the scans can't be done, BUT just as men frisk men and women frisk women because of modesty and decency, the scans should also take this into account. Either women scan women etc. or the scan is viewed in an office out of view of who is being scanned. Female modesty is not a uniquely Jewish issue.

aviation security checks are very importand but the world must respect the ethic and religious rules of the islam and the jews !!!

In cases like this I am sure there would be no Halachic ruling banning it. Just the way a woman is allowed to sit next to a man who is not her husband on a bus or plane despite how some haredi feel something like this I am sure would also be acceptable. This is about protection of life and nobody is interested in the woman herself all they care about is she has no bombs or weapons.. She is not looked at in a sexual way. Also as a lest resort for those orthodox who go to extremes then they can have a female security officer give the woman a physical search behind a screen. This is a small group or rabbis who have heard about a new technology they don't understand the first thing about and they are jumping to conclusions without first learning all the facts about the thing.

Wouldn't make sense to, I don't know, admit what your enemies already have, that They are at War with You and respond in turn. Nope, better to lie to yourself. Better to bind yourself in chains, to save them the trouble, of defeating you.

All they are suggesting is that women be scanned by women and men by men. I remember being in the US in October 2001. I was regularly selected for being patted down (it's the suspenders that make the magnetometers beep) and having to insist on being frisked by a male. Now it's standard. Is this any different?

It appears that that according to the Rabbis being modest and being viewed in an X-ray image applies only to women. We men are not subject to the rules of modesty - so why must we wear modest clothing? Really Rabbis - this is 'Pikuach Nefesh' (saving a life) so that the rules of modesty may be broken! The same issue was raised by the public in London. The Airport Authority said the person seeing the scan will not be able to see the person being scanned. Modesty is a female issue, not just a Jewish issue.

Yeah, a crazy busy airport like Heathrow or JFK or Schipol is going to accomodate the lunatic fringe. No one will be touching them and in most cases, the person scanning will not see the person in the scanner, so deal with it....or stay in your shtetl!

I flew soon after the incident and immediately recognized the scanners as the same scanners I've seen the Israeli border police using for years at the Allenby bridge checkpoint from Jordan into the West Bank! Is modesty only a concern when these are used against orthodox Jewish women, or is there a more general concern here?
