Canada students counter 'Israel Apartheid Week' with controversial campaign
'Size Doesn't Matter' campaign taking place in 23 campuses across Canada, highlights Israel's achievements.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Canada Jewish World Israel newsA controversial pro-Israel campaign was launched in universities across Canada last week, in an attempt to counter the global pro-Palestinian campaign, "Israel Apartheid Week," launched on Sunday.
The campaign, named "Size Doesn't Matter," was initiated by the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students, and is taking place in 23 universities across Canada, according the official "Size Doesn't Matter" website.
An especially peppery video ad posted on the campaign website displays a young couple in bed, with the young woman complaining of the "size" of what turns out to be a map of Israel.
Organizers said that the campaign was aimed at "highlighting the multitude of Israeli accomplishments and contributions," saying it was the "result of the combined efforts by the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students (CFJS), local Hillels, Jewish Student Associations, and Israel on Campus organizations across Canada."
The campaign website indicated that renowned speakers will be discussing Mideast-related issues, including Khaled Abu Toameh, Dr. Joel Kotek, Dr. Mohammed Wattad, and Ismael Khaldi.
"We are very excited about this campaign," said Rebecca Cherniak, Israel Affairs Chair for the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students.
"On many Canadian campuses, Israel is often vilified by anti-Israel proponents. The "Size Doesn't Matter" campaign will showcase an Israel that many students have never seen before," Cherniak said.

It's clear to many of us that there are serious questions to be asked about Islam being a racist religion. Because so many nations are Islamic and undemocratic, does Islamic Racism pose threat to world peace? It's time for students around the world to wake up, get out from under the anti-Israel propaganda waterfall, and look at where this is coming from. There are no shortage of Islamic movements who want to kill Canadians because they are infidels. There are ongoing trials in Toronto following up on the confessions and convictions of the Mississauga Islamic terrorists who were ready to commit mass-murder of Canadians in the name of Islam. It looks like "Apartheid" is a red herring and that Islamic racism and Islamic terrorism are the real threats that should be discussed on campus.
Let's make sure we don't lose sight of the real goal: peace. We are starting the Pax101 evolution on FB and Twitter - @Pax_101. Civil dialogue and respectful debate are the roads to the future.
I think Israel needs new publicists.
As a graduate of the U. of Alberta in 1943 who by chance married an Economics student from Israel and now have a flock of descents all who live in it but one, it is heartening to hear of the campaign. Jean Kadmon. (My official name is Jean Kosloff. As a writer, painter, poet I use the name (Jean Kadmon. My Web site is WWW.kdo.co.il/jean
Um your an American telling Israel to stop the assassinations and kidnappings? You have probably already forgotten about Guantanamo bay, oh and the uncalled for war in Iraq, so perhaps yall should get out of Iraq and leave them alone, and stop your kidnapping and assassinations.
NY Guy, do us Israelis a favor. Tell the Palestinians - Hamas, as well as all the Palestinian still anti-Israel proponents in the West Bank - to make peace with Israel. When they agree to do so, Israel can stop its counry-protecting activites. Until then, all's fair in love and war.
Kudos to the recent Canadian Jewish initiative to counter all the biased anti-Israel invective infecting the news waves. All Zionists who care about Israel's future should learn from them, in Israel and abroad.
It doesnt matter how Israels gouvernement feels.
Look at what you are doing !!! Get out, Stay out and leave them alone! Stay within your own borders. Stop the assassinations, stop the kidnappings, stop the lies, stop stealing land that doesnt belong to you, stop building walls where they dont belong, and stop the settlements!!
On many Canadian campuses, Israel is often vilified by anti-Israel proponents. WHYYYYYY?
which has the largest Jewish population per capita outside Israel
Such a base, vapid ideology cannot lead anyone- not even themselves. The key to our future, just like our past, is in Judaism, which is why the only remaining Zionism is religious Zionism.
Says it all about the authors of this headline
...Wales in the UK, Slovenia in Europe and New Jersey in the US. Israel has about 5.5 million Jews, and no natural resources to speak of but its human resources. This is the "empire" some attempt to describe, ready to take over the region and the world.. Something to ponder when dealing with this tiny entity!!!
Haaretz is an Israeli newspaper, isn't it? Then why does it lend its voice to those who would eradicate the very place that the people working for Haaretz call home and stigmatize those who fight FOR the continued existence of Israel by calling their imaginative initiative "controversial?"
and after seeing that video, all I can say is Israel's Hasbara Brigade needs to hire new publicists, cuz' the ones they have right now are idi@ts.
Israel lost my support back in 1997 when Mossad were caught using fake Canadian passports in a botched assassination attempt authorized by Netanyahu. If Canada used fake Israeli passports it would automatically be called an "anti-Semitic crime against humanity etc." It seems Israel is doing a great job in isolating themselves from the world community. No amount of student campaigns will help change the image of Israel and its self destructive policies.
This is a grossly misleading and slanted article. How in the world is this pro-Israel campaign a 'controversial' one? Please remove this headline immediately, it is extremely offensive to a lot of people, and not just Jews and Israelis.
Haaretz doesn't seem to call the rabid anti-Israel 'apartheid' hate campaign controversial. Yet, they call the response controversial
I fully support having a pro Israel campaign on these campuses but have things really come to this? Comparing Israel to a penis? Maybe the reason more and more students are pro Palestinian is because of idiotic efforts like this. The pro Palestinian students are presenting a human rights argument to vilify Israel and are doing it by brining in professors and human rights experts and this is our response? A joke which compares Israel to a penis? I think we can do a lot better.
I had occasion to visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC last summer, and spent hours reading the newspaper and magazine articles published in Germany in the 1932-37 period in an effort to understand. It is chilling and sad to see how closely the "Israel Apartheid" narrative follows in the footsteps of that shameful movement. I would have thought the horrors of the Nazi era were enough to dissuade similar movements for many centuries. Thank you, Canadians, for standing up to these misguided youth, who have obviously so much to learn.
Why not address shameful Israeli apartheid? All the accomplishments in the world won't overshadow this crime.
This campaign will create more discussion that will make the world better understand what is at stake. The real issue is not what Israel has offered the world. The real issue is a moral one. What does Israel continue to involve itself in, morally, in undermining a native people who deserve a space on this planet as well. The world desires peace between these two nations, not another diatribe on why Israel is so great.
Sudanese refugees,Black Africans,Palestinian treatement by their loving brothers. None of the above gets a mention by the mindless mob that screams Israel.
One easily receives the impression that this campaign seeks to negate the effects of "Israel Apartheid Week" by focusing upon Israel's accomplishments. The criticism, fair or unfair, voiced in "Israel Apartheid Week" is not that Israel has no accomplishments, but rather that there might be serious issues in the areas of human rights, of Israel's relationship both to its minority-population and to the Palestinian population in the West Bank, and of its engaging in policies and actions that only deepen conflict and hostility. It appears that the campaign, instead, seeks to answer questions which no one is asking.
Haaretz, Why don't you provide the URL of the said website?
This clip is the response of the Jewish students of Canada to Israel's illegal and immoral occupation: Even though Israel is small it has accomplished much, so size does not matter. Agreed 100%! But that does not erase the fact that Israel's policies are illegal and immoral. Good spin on the "size" issue because all Israel has done is to steal land and steal land thus increasing it size, so a bit ironic to talk about the "small" size of Israel in response to the people critical of Israel. Nice try but typically deceiving and self righteous. How about the size of Palestine? I guess 78 % for Israel and 22% for Palestinians is not enough is it?
A map of Israel as well as the awesome Omri Casspi.
...is what it means to be Canadian. We may freely discuss all sides of the issues, as long as it is not propogating hate. So welcome "Size Doesn't Matter" AND "Israel Apartheid Week"! Let the discussions begin, and, hopefully, they be positive and candid intellectual discussions!
against all the dreck they spew on campus. kol hakavod
